Grief is a natural response to loss. It can be felt in many ways. Grief’s impact can be emotional, social, spiritual, physical and financial. It is as individual as the person you loved and lost. Grieving while living away from family and friends can be especially difficult. This is a place where you can share your thoughts, and get ideas on how to cope. It is here for you to get support and validation.

Holidays can be very difficult on our grief journeys. Finding a way to honor and remember our loved one on a holiday or any difficult day can be helpful. Putting our grief feelings into positive actions can be more helpful than completely pushing our grief away. Honoring our loved one can be as simple as lighting a candle or as complicated as giving back to our community in an activity that was important to our loved one. Perhaps coming together as a family to volunteer at an animal shelter on a difficult day would be the most meaningful way to honor the loved one who was an animal lover. Giving ourselves a timeframe to remember and honor the gifts of our loved one and then engaging in a self care activity or healthy distracting activity after is important.

You may ask yourself some of the following questions when deciding the best way to honor and remember your loved one. What was important to your loved one? What gifts did your loved one give to you and to others? How can you give these gifts to those around you?
